Yellowcat's Annual Theatre Workshop for Children |
There are many different ways of making theater with children, the most common of which requires children to memorize pre-scripted dialogue from a prepared script and parrot it out at the end in a show. More often than not, this way of making theater turns into an exercise in elocution rather than an imaginative and creative adventure which is what all theater should be.
Yellowcat's workshop takes an entirely different approach. The workshop program has been developed after much experimentation, and is designed to introduce young people to the PROCESS of playmaking. Over the course of four weeks, participants brainstorm, experiment, write, improvize and act out their own play. The emphasis is on original expression, and learning through experimentation and making mistakes.
The workshop focuses on stories - stories as they are heard, read, told, found, experienced, imagined and performed. Participants explore different ways in which to tell - and perform - what are essentially their stories through various creative forms such as art, craft, movement, music, drama and improvisation. This year there is a special focus on exploring photography and the sketched image as starting points for storytelling and performing. This, of course, is a homage to our highly visual culture but it is also an exploration of storytelling as a form in the digital age. We’ve got some experiments with cameras lined up. Let’s see what those yield.
